The triennial World Petroleum Congress is widely known as the "Olympics" of the petroleum industry and covers all aspects of the industry from technological advances in upstream and downstream operations to the role of natural gas and renewables, management of the industry and its social, economic and environmental impact. In addition, outside stakeholders such as governments, other industry sectors, NGOs and international institutions have also joined in the dialogue. Turkey won its bid to host the 22nd World Petroleum Congress in 2017 in Istanbul, beating powerful opponent Houston in the final vote. Istanbul competed with Astana of Kazakhstan, Houston and Copenhagen during the World Petroleum Forum in Calgary, Canada. Members from 52 countries eliminated Copenhagen in the first round. Second round of voting ended the hope for Astana and Istanbul and Houston made it to the final. Istanbul bid for the World Petroleum Congress three times previously without success. This time, however, Istanbul received the 55 percent of the votes to win its bid to host the prestigious 22nd of the World Petroleum Congress. The next congress will take place in 2014 in Moscow. The event is expected to draw some 10,000 high-level executives and government officials from energy-producing countries.
