Turkish Airlines To Depart from Istanbul 's Second Airport

Turkish Airlines will start using Istanbul 's second Airport; International Sabiha Gokcen Airport for domestic flights.

Turkish Airlines will depart from Sabiha Gokcen Airport from April 17th to Izmir , Antalya , Adana and Trabzon . The new departure point in Istanbul is expected to decrease traffic at Istanbul Ataturk Airport . The new flights from Sabiha Gokcen Airport will have special discounted fares.

30% Increase In Tourist Arrivals To Turkey

1,107,260 tourists visited Turkey in March 2005, Turkish Culture & Tourism Ministry said on April 6th.

The Ministry stated that the number of foreign visitors increased by 41.2 percent in March of 2005 when compared with March of 2004.

According to figures released by the Ministry, the number of visitors from OECD member countries increased by 53.99 percent, while the rise in number of tourists coming from East European countries was 16.88 percent.

Germany was ranked the first among countries sending the highest number of tourists to Turkey. Bulgaria, Iran, Greece, Russian Federation, the Netherlands, Azerbaijan, Britain, France, Switzerland, Georgia, Belgium, USA, Austria and Israel followed Germany.

On the other hand, the number of foreigners visiting Turkey rose by 30.04 percent between January and March 2005, over to the same quarter of the previous year. 2,504,029 foreigners visited Turkey in this period.

Germans again were the first among foreigners visiting Turkey between January and March 2005, while they were followed by Bulgarians and Iranians.

Anzacs Visited Their Ancestors' Graves In Gallipoli

Anzacs who came to Gallipoli peninsula of northwestern Canakkale city attended the 90th anniversary of Canakkale Battles and commemoration ceremonies, visited the graves of their ancestors.

About 25,000 Anzacs participated in ceremonies to mark the 90th anniversary of the battles at Gallipoli. The ceremonies for the remembrance of all those who died in the Gallipoli War will be held in spots including the Canakkale Martyrs Monument and Anzac Bay.

The ceremony is held on April 24-25 with the participation of the Turkey Chief of the General Staff General Hilmi Özkök, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan along with many high ranking military and civilian officials and nearly 50,000 visitors.

Australia 's Minister of Veterans Anne Kelly remarked that the words "your sons have become our sons" by Ataturk for the Anzacs who died in Gallipoli have a special place in the hearts and souls of Australians.

Meanwhile an Australian chorus gave a concert during the commemoration ceremonies.

F1 Turkey Grand Prix Promoted In Paris

The Formula 1 (F1) race to be held in Istanbul for the first time in August was promoted in French capital of Paris on Thursday (April 28th).

F1 experts and pilots attended the meeting held at Turkey 's Culture & Promotion Office in Paris .

F-1 pilot French Patrick Tambay said, "The Istanbul circuit is one hour away from (Turkish commercial hub of) Istanbul 's downtown by car, and 15 minutes by helicopter. So, easy transportation is an advantage."

National Tourism Week Celebrated in Turkey

National Tourism Week celebrated throughout Turkey between April 15-22. In Istanbul , Tourism Week started with a ceremony held at Sultanahmet Square . Istanbul Governor Muammer Güler, Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Kadir Topbas, Eminönü Mayor Nevzat Er and representatives from the tourism sector attended the ceremony, which received great interest from tourists and Istanbulites.

Güler stated that Istanbul has the potential to become the cultural capital of Europe by 2010, and said, "State, local administrators, the private sector and Istanbulites should work together to bring this beautiful city to the position that it deserves."

Afterwards a concert was performed by Janissary Band university students, who performed folkloric dances. During the ceremony citizens and tourists were offered meals and drinks. Güler and Topbas offered baklava to tourists.

In Cappadocia , sculptures from  St. Petersburg 's Wax Sculpture Museum are exhibited at historic Uçhisar Castle between April 15 and June 15 as part of the Tourism Week. Uçhisar Castle is one of the most important cultural sites in Cappadocia.

A conference titled " Turkey 's Tourism Appeal" was held at Mustafa Kemal University 's Junior College of Tourism in Hatay as part of National Tourism Week activities.
